“Solomon – Righteous King or Evil Emperor?”
(1Samuel 8:7…20)And the LORD said to Samuel, “Heed the voice of the people in all that they say to you; for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me, that I should not reign over them.” “Now therefore, heed their voice. However, you shall solemnly forewarn them, and show them the behavior of the king who will reign over them.” So Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who asked him for a king. And he said, “This will be the behavior of the king who will reign over you: He will take your sons and appoint them for his own chariotsand to behis horsemen, and some will runbefore his chariots. “He will appointcaptains overhis thousands and captains overhisfifties, will set some to plow his ground and reaphis harvest, and some to make his weapons of war and equipmentfor his chariots. “He will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers.”And he will take the best of your fields, your vineyards, and your olive groves, and give them tohis servants.“He will take a tenth of your grain and your vintage, and giveit to his officers and servants.”
(1Kings 9:22b)They were men of war, and hisservants, and hisprinces, and hiscaptains, and rulers of hischariots, andhis horsemen.
(1Kings 12:3b~4)And Jeroboam and all the congregation of Israel came, and spoke to Rehoboam, saying, Your father made our yoke grievous: now therefore make the grievous service of your father, and his heavy yoke which he put upon us, lighter, and we will serve thee.
(1Kings 12:13~14)Then the king answered the people roughly, and rejected the advice which the elders had given him; and he spoke to them according to the advice of the young men, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scourges!”
(Deuteronomy 17:17a)Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away:
(1Kings 14:31)And Rehoboam slept with his fathers, and was buried with his fathers in the city of David. And his mother’s name was Naamah an Ammonitess.
(Deuteronomy 7:3~4)Neither shalt thoumake marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. For they will turn away thy son from following me, that they may serve other gods: so will the anger of the Lord be kindled against you, and destroy thee suddenly.
(1Kings 11:1~4)But king Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaoh, women of the Moabites, Ammonites, [Edomites, Zidonians,] and Hittites; Of the nations concerning which the Lord said unto the children of Israel, Ye shall notgo in to them, neither shall they come in unto you: for surely they will turn away your heart after their gods: Solomon clave unto these in love. And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines: and his wives turned away his heart. For it came to pass, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned away his heartafter other gods:
(Ezekiel 18:24)But when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and does according to all the abominations that the wicked man does, shall he live? All the righteousness which he has done shall not be remembered; because of the unfaithfulness of which he is guilty and the sin which he has committed, because of them he shall die.
(1Kings 11:5) For Solomon went afterAshtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
(Deuteronomy 7:5)But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.
(1Kings 11:7~8)Then did Solomon built an high place for Chemosh, the abomination of Moab, in the hill that is before Jerusalem, and for Molech, the abomination of the children of Ammon. And likewise did he for all his strange wives, which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods.
(Leviticus 18:21)And thou shalt not let any of thy seed pass through the fire to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the Lord.
(Jeremiah 7:30~31)For the children of Judah have done evil in my sight, saith the Lord: they have set their abominations in the house which is called by my name, to pollute it. And they have built the high places of Tophet, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire; which I commanded them not, neither came it into my heart.
(Leviticus 20:1~5)Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Again, you shall say to the children of Israel: Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones.I will set My face against that man, and will cut him off from his people, because he has given some of his descendants to Molech, to defile My sanctuary and profane My holy name. And if the people of the land should in any way hide their eyes from the man, when he gives some of his descendants to Molech, and they do not kill him, then I will set My face against that man and against his family;and I will cut him off from his people, and all who prostitute themselves with him to commit harlotry with Molech.
(2Kings 23:13)And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israelhad builded for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon, did the king defile.
(1Kings 11:9~11)So the Lord became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the Lord God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he did not keep what the Lord had commanded. Therefore the Lord said to Solomon, “Because you have done this, and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
(Deuteronomy 17:16)But he shall not multiply horsesto himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he should multiply horses:
(1Kings 4:26)And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.
(1Kings 10:28[~29])Also Solomon had horses imported from Egypt; Now a chariot that was imported from Egypt cost six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse one hundred and fifty; and thus, through their agents, they exported themtoall the kings of the Hittites and the kings of Syria.
(Deuteronomy 17:17b)neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.
(1Kings 10:21)And all king Solomon’s drinking vessels were of gold,
(Revelation 13:18)Here is wisdom.Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man: His number is 666.
(1Kings 10:14)The weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-sixtalents of gold,
[Note: talent = 他連得; 1 talent他連得= 34 kg公斤or 74.96 lb磅]
(1Kings 4:30~31)Thus Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of allthe men of the East and all the wisdom of Egypt. For he was wiser than all menandhis fame was in all the surrounding nations.
(Ezekiel 16:10…26)“Thus you were adorned with gold and silver, …You were exceedingly beautiful, and succeeded to royalty. “Your fame went out among the nationsbecause of your beauty, for it was perfect through Mysplendor which Ihad bestowed on you,” says the Lord GOD.”But you trusted in your own beauty, played the harlot because of your fame, “Moreover you took your sons and your daughters, whom you bore to Me,and these you sacrificed to them to be devoured. Were your acts of harlotry a small matter, “that you have slain Mychildren and offered them up to them by causing them to pass through the fire?” you also built for yourself a shrine, and made a high place for yourself in every street. “You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by,
(1Kings 3:23~25)And the king said, “The one says, ‘This is my son, who lives, and your son is the dead one’; and the other says, ‘No! But your son is the dead one, and my son is the living one.’ Then the king said, “Bring me a sword.” So they brought a sword before the king. And the king said, “Divide the living child in two, and give half to one, and half to the other.”
(Exodus 4:22~23)Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the Lord: “Israel is My son, My firstborn. So I say to you, let My son go that he may serve Me. But if you refuse to let him go, indeed I will kill your son, your firstborn.”
(1Kings 9:10~13)Now it happened at the end of twenty years, when Solomon had built the two houses, the house of the LORD and the king’s house (Hiram the king of Tyre had supplied Solomon with cedar and cypress and gold, as much as he desired), that King Solomon then gave Hiram twenty cities in the land of Galilee. Then Hiram went from Tyre to see the cities which Solomon had given him, but they did not please him.So he said, “What kind of cities are these which you have given me, my brother?” And he called them the land of Cabul, as they are to this day.
(1Kings 10:23~24)So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom. Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.
(Nehemiah 13:23~26)In those days I also saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of one or the other people. So I contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, “You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves. “Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God; and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless pagan women caused even him to sin. “Should we then hear of your doing all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women?”
(1Chronicles 28:11~13)Then David gave his son Solomon the plansfor the vestibule, its houses, its treasuries, its upper chambers, its inner chambers, and the place of the mercy seat; and the plans for all that he had by the Spirit, of the courtsof the house of the LORD, of all the chambersall around, of the treasuriesof the house of God, and of the treasuries for the dedicated things; also for the division of the priestsand the Levites, for all the work of the serviceof the house of the LORD, and for all the articles of servicein the house of the LORD.
14~18He (David) gave goldby weight for things of gold, for all articles used in every kind of service; also silverfor all articles of silverby weight, for all articles used in every kind of service; the weight for the lampstands of gold, and their lamps of gold, by weight for each lampstand and its lamps; for the lampstands of silver by weight, for the lampstand and its lamps, according to the use of each lampstand. And by weight he gave gold for the tables of the showbread, for each table, and silver for the tables of silver; also pure gold for the forks, the basins, the pitchers of pure gold, and the golden bowls-he gave gold by weight for every bowl; and for the silver bowls, silver by weight for every bowl; and refined gold by weight for the altar of incense, and for the construction of the chariot, that is, the gold cherubim that spread their wings and overshadowed the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
19“All this,” said David, “the LORD made me understandin writing, by His hand upon me, all the works of these plans.”
(1Chronicles 29:1-5)Furthermore King David said to all the assembly: “My son Solomon, whom alone God has chosen, is young and inexperienced; and the work is great, because the temple is not for man but for the LORD God. “Now for the house of my God I have prepared with all my might: gold for things to be made of gold, silver for things of silver, bronze for things of bronze, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood, onyx stones, stones to be set, glistening stones of various colors, all kinds of precious stones, and marble slabs in abundance.”Moreover, because I have set my affection on the house of my God, I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house, my own special treasure of gold and silver:
(1Chronicles 29:14~19)But who am I,and who are my people, That we should be able to offer so willingly as this? For all things come from You, And of Your own we have given You.For we are aliens and pilgrims before You, As were all our fathers; Our days on earth are as a shadow, And without hope. “O LORD our God, all this abundance that we have prepared to build You a house for Your holy name is from Your hand, and is all Your own. ” do all these things, and to build the temple forwhich I have made provision.”
(1Kings 6:1)And it came to pass in the four hundred and eightieth year after the children of Israel had come out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth yearof Solomon’s reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv, which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the LORD.
(1Kings 6:37-38)In the fourth year the foundation of the house of the LORD was laid, in the month of Ziv. 38And in the eleventh year, in the month of Bul, which is the eighth month, the house was finished in all its details and according to all its plans. So he was seven years in building it.
(1Kings 7:1~2)But Solomon took thirteen years to build his own house; so he finished all his house.
(1Kings 7:8)And the house where he dwelt had another court inside the hall, of like workmanship. Solomon also made a house like this hall for Pharaoh’s daughter, whom he had taken as wife.
(1Kings 5:13~16)Then King Solomon raised up a labor force out of all Israel; and the labor force was thirty thousand men.And he sent them to Lebanon, ten thousand a month in shifts: they were one month in Lebanon and two months at home; Adoniram was in charge of the labor force. Solomon had seventy thousand who carried burdens, and eighty thousand who quarried stone in the mountains, besides three thousand three hundredfrom the chiefs of Solomon’s deputies, who supervised the people who labored in the work.
(2Chronicles 6:1~2)Then Solomon spoke: “The LORD said He would dwell in the dark cloud. I have surely builtYou an exalted house, And a place for You to dwell in forever.”
(2Chronicles 6:18)“But will God indeed dwell with men on the earth? Behold, heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain You. How much less this temple which I have built!
(2Chronicles 6:32~34)“Moreover, concerning a foreigner, who is not of Your people Israel, but who comes from a far country for the sake of Your great name and Your mighty hand and Your outstretched arm, when they come and pray in this temple; “then hear from heaven Your dwelling place, and do according to all for which the foreigner calls to You, that all peoples of the earth may know Your name and fear You, as do Your people Israel, and that they may know that this temple which I have builtis called by Your name. “When Your people go out to battle against their enemies, wherever You send them, and when they pray to You toward this city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name,
(2Chronicles 6:38)“and when they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their captivity, where they have been carried captive, and pray toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You have chosen, and toward the temple which I have builtfor Your name:
(Psalms 127:1)<<A Song of degrees for Solomon.>>Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vainthat build it:
(Ecclesiastes 2:11)Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanityand grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.
(1Kings 8:62-64)Then the king and all Israel with him offered sacrifices before the LORD. And Solomon offered a sacrifice of peace offerings, which he offered to the LORD, twenty-two thousand bullsand one hundred and twenty thousand sheep. So the king and all the children of Israel dedicated the house of the LORD. On the same day the king consecrated the middle of the courtthat was in front of the house of the LORD; for there he offered burnt offerings, grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings, because the bronze altar that was before the LORD was too smallto receive the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, and the fat of the peace offerings.
(Deuteronomy 8:10~14,17~18)“When you have eaten and are full, then you shall bless the LORD your God for the good land which He has given you.” Beware that you do not forget the LORD your God by not keeping His commandments, His judgments, and His statutes which I command you today, “lest-when you have eaten and are full, and have built beautiful housesand dwell in them; “and when your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver and your gold are multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied; “when your heart is lifted up, and you forget the LORD your Godwho brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage;. and lest thou say in thy heart, My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth. But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.
(Ecclesiastes 1:16)Icommuned with myheart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before mein Jerusalem. Myheart has understood great wisdom and knowledge.”
Now take your time and listen to what Solomon declared about life in Ecc 2, the next chapter:
(Ecclesiastes 2:1)Isaid in myheart, “Come now, Iwill test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure”; but surely, this also was vanity. 3Isearched in myheart how to gratify myfleshwith wine, while guiding myheart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till Imight see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives. 4Imademyworks great, Ibuiltmyselfhouses, and planted myselfvineyards. 5Imademyselfgardens and orchards, and Iplanted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6I made myselfwater pools from which to water the growing trees of the grove. 7Iacquired male and female servants, and had servants born in myhouse. Yes, Ihad greater possessions of herds and flocksthan all who were in Jerusalem before me. 8Ialso gathered for myselfsilver and goldand the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. Iacquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and musical instruments of all kinds. 9So Ibecame greatand excelled more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also mywisdom remained with me. 10 Whatever myeyes desired Idid not keep from them. Idid not withhold myheart from any pleasure, formyheart rejoiced in all mylabor; and this was myreward from all mylabor. 11Then Ilooked on all the works that myhands had done and on the labor in which Ihad toiled; And indeed all was vanityand grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun. 14The wise man’s eyes are in his head, but the foolwalks in darkness. Yet Imyselfperceived that the same event happens to them all. 15So Isaid in myheart, “As it happens to the fool, it also happens to me,And why was I then more wise?” Then Isaid in myheart, “This also is vanity.” 16For there is no more remembrance of the wise than of the foolforever, Since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come. And how does a wise man die? As the fool! 17Therefore Ihated lifebecause the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind. 18ThenIhated all my laborin which Ihad toiled under the sun, because Imust leave it to the man who will come after me.19And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myselfwise under the sun. This also is vanity. 20Therefore I turned myheart and despaired of all the labor in whichIhad toiled under the sun. 21For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a manwho has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.24Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.
(Luke 12:16~21) Then He spoke a parable to them, saying: “The ground of a certain rich manyielded plentifully.” And he thought within himself, saying, ‘What shall Ido, since I have no room to store my crops?'” So he said, ‘Iwill do this: Iwill pull down mybarns and build greater, and thereIwill store all mycrops and mygoods. ‘And Iwill say to mysoul, “Soul, you have many goods laid up for many years; take your ease; eat, drink, and be merry.“‘ “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?’ “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.”
(Luke 12:27)“Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
(Ecclesiastes 8:15)So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry;for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.
